I just spent like 45mins writing a massive post and lost all of it because this bloody forum doesn't have undo feature for the text entry Neutral

So i'll start again this time in notepad :P

For the past 16 or so hours i've been working on the first vertigo map where the flight from Weather Kontrol to C17 crashes into a building.

Now there has been some debate about what time of day this is, but i have put the pieces together and i think it was supposed to be night-time because of the amount of flares in the map.

Here's what i've done so far:
  • Added much more destruction detail
  • Replaced all the old flares with new custom ones
  • Added Fog
  • Added Colour correction (custom made specifically for this map)
  • Added rain
  • Added lightning strikes + better thunder/rain sounds
  • Added more fire
  • Added cubemaps
  • Lowered the luxel scale for better quality shadows
  • Changed skybox to a night sky from DOD:S
  • Added C130 aircraft from L4D (Skin by Doomlord, modified by me)
  • Added sprites & Lights to the C130 because the L4D ones are particle systems and best used for moving models (this plane aint goin anywhere :P)
  • Carved a shitload out from the map to make it look like an actual plane had crashed into it (took several hours)
  • Added smoke
  • Fixed all the rebars
  • Removed an annoying repeating old beta rain sound and replaced it with a much more pleasant one
  • Changed lots of odd brushes to func_detail


Prior to doing this (about 18 months ago) i tried to fix all the "Pink X" materials but didn't have the knowledge needed to do a good job of it.
Now that i've been using Photoshop much more frequently i revisited this little project and was able to fix about 95% of all the "Pink X" marble and stonewall materials without much difference to what the original would of looked like.
So they are in this map aswell (they also have a normal map alpha envmask aswell)

TODO:

  • Fix fog (looks like poo at the moment and i've tried just about every tutorial i can find on how to fix this but there are about 0 tutorials for night time fog maps with 3D Skyboxes)
  • Replace the shitty little hexagonal flare sticks with something better (a model perhaps?)
  • Fix the lightning strikes (they are way too small at the moment and very fast [hard to see them])
  • Fix the fire sprites - They are "ducking" behind models even when they are infront when using "Additive" render mode. I tried World Space Glow and that makes it worse (can see the sprites through the world)
  • Add env_soundscapes
  • Put better textures on the 3D Skybox buildings (they are temp for now because it was solid concrete before)
  • Add proper furniture props to the level under the top deck (They are wooden brushes atm even the computer monitors :P)
  • Fix "Too many light styles" warning (not sure what light this is coming from because i have many in the vicinity of where it tells me)
  • Add camera and paths for demo video?

HGrunt I think. That mod also had some lameass custom guns and enemies that weren't even needed in the mod, which meant that I pretty much had to reinstall all my custom stuff because of it.

at least he MADE a Vertigo mod, we should be glad about that imo

but Jenkins' effort in detailing is clearly visible. all the screens (except the 3rd pic) have intense atmosphere, you can almost smell the ashes Thumb up

Well......didn't you ever see him on there forums? slating me? thats the best one.
I don't like him because he basicaly listens to everything MI said, for instance, Hgrunt's reaction to my Arcade:

THE EXACT same thing mi said, and the exact same thing mi say to most mappers even though they can't take this advice themselves. and this comming from a person that basicaly did once again what mi did, took the vertigo maps and just put start and exit locations, thats it...he didn't even put in a fucking plane where the crash site is.

And i can't wait to see what that lightning looks like jenkins..

::EDIT:: oh yeah i forgot, 2 days after slating me he expected me to give him my model and map pack without even so much as saying please.......yeah...sorry but MI cock end lol

well not STRICTLY true jenkins we are still on topic (is about vertigo after all lol) like this, i think there should be a RATHER large fire from the cockpit/nosecone, to give it that authentic look, and id also add a couple of lights on the wall, maybe flicking on and off with sparks comming out of them? i dunno just REALLY over-do that "BROKEN" detail feeling ya know???

Fire is so fail in Source...

The only game that has good fire is L4D and thats all done with coding :/

The idea of Vertigo was in the original HL2 storyline, Its happens after Weather Control when the C-130 crashes... I can't explain this well enough.
